| No stopping these young Hindi learners |
| Vadodara: You will be in for a surprise if you visit the boys observatory at Karelibaug. Inmates there will floor you with their ability to write, speak and read out stories in Hindi eloquently.
And this can be
attributed to Yuva U n s t o p p abl e, Vadodara chapter of youth organisation. The NGO has undertaken language proficiency project for the kids at the observatory and the fruits are already showing.
The project is aimed at helping children to read story books given to them by Yuva Unstoppable volunteers. “Hindi is one language these kids know and are comfortable speaking in. So instead of taking up English or Gujarati lessons, we decided to conduct classes where these inmates could be taught to read, write and understand the Hindi texts in story and text books,” said a volunteer Neha Gor, who is a branch head with a
consultancy firm in the city.
Gor recounts that when boys were given story books, these kids would often tear them off or scribble on them. “There were hardly two or three kids who could read. When one of the volunteers visited them , they insisted that we read out stories to them.”
There are seven volunteers who are working on this project. They conduct classes at the observatory for 15 students present. The project was started on April 29. In a short span of time, there has been a marked changed in the kids’ attitude. |
